GENERAL LEAGUE TIMELINE

Winter League

Oct – Mar

10 weeks, 8 games, 2 byes before the holidays and 10 weeks, 8 games, 2 byes after the holidays.  The beginning of the curling season and time to renew membership.  Teams from the previous season’s Winter league may grandfather into their corresponding upcoming Winter league.  Remaining openings are offered in general registration.

Playoffs

Apr

Teams from Winter League may register to participate in playoffs which determine the club champion.  Teams are seeded by league standings.

Spring League

May – Jun

6 weeks, 6 games.  A great time to try curling as some leagues are just for beginners.  General registration is open to all teams and membership is prorated.

Ice Out/Maintenance

late Jun – beg Jul

No curling – ice maintenance.

Summer League

Aug – Sep

6 weeks, 6 games. Many variations of curling available!  General registration is open to all teams and membership is prorated.

LEAGUE DESCRIPTIONS

 
MEN’S
Men only league.  Any mix of new and experienced curlers.
  
WOMEN’S
Women only league. Any mix of new and experienced curlers.
  
MIXED
Two men and two women.  Genders must alternate in throwing order.
  
OPEN
Any mix of gender or and skill level.  Experience varies from a couple of years to 30+ years.  
  
FUTURES
 A league for new curlers or combination of new/experienced.  Any mix of gender or age.  The Futures league is perfect for those who have participated in a  Learn to Curl class or group event.
  
EXPERIENCED OPEN 
A league for experienced curlers only.  Play will more competitive and games will be eight ends.
  
CORPORATE 
A league of employee teams from a workplace.  Many employers assist with team’s league/membership fees as part of  employee wellness/teambuilding.

DOUBLES
2-person team.  Rocks are positioned prior to start of the end.  One player throws rocks 1 and 5, the other throws rocks 2, 3, and 4.  No takeouts are allowed until the 4th delivered stone. 
A common variation is mixed doubles- which is one male and one female.

TRIPLES
3-person team. A fun game for ALL curlers- everybody gets a chance to play each team position!  6 end game, 6 rocks.  One thrower, one sweeper, one skip.  Each person plays lead, second, and skip for two consecutive ends.
Ends 1-2 and 3-4 are worth one point each.  Ends 5-6 are worth two points each.  Score a point you win the end.   Points carry over and hammer switches teams with a blank end or score.  Ties are one person draw (any player) with one sweeper and one skip.  One sweeper between hog lines.  Lead’s rocks are free guard zone.

1 on 1
1 on 1 game.  6 ends, 8 rocks.  Free guard zone rule applies, tick rule not enforced.  Sweeping optional for your rocks, no sweeping opponents rocks (even behind the tee).  Quick, fun, and great practice!  

Please note:  Junior teams (under age 18) may participate in leagues as part of Subzero Curling.  Outside of SubZero, junior teams must have at least one adult (age 18+) playing with the team.

The 5-rock free-guard zone rule will be used for league play; the no-tick rule will not.  (See page 12 of WCF Rules of Curling for more information.)

LEAGUE TRANSFERS

Winter teams have grandfather status to register into their CORRESPONDING league in the upcoming Winter season.  Teams wishing to transfer to another league day/time should log their request  to transfer.  (Teams must register for their regular league to hold that spot and will be contacted if a transfer spot becomes available.)

INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS

If you would like to curl in leagues, but currently do not have a team, please register as an individual player.  We will contact you if we have league openings or if teams need an additional player.
